We are currently in a period of pastoral transition, that is, between installed pastors, following the retirement of Dr. Frank Allen on September 1, 2020. Our interim pastor is Dr. Michael Slayter, a Commissioned Pastor. Dr. Slayter, at the end of his training from Dubuque Theological Seminary, was commissioned by Central Florida Presbytery in December of 2016.
Dr. Slayter’s primary education was not in theology, but in veterinary medicine. He graduated with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M in 1969, spent four years in private practice and twenty-one years in the Veterinary Corps of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with multiple Commendation Medals and the Legion of Merit. Along the way, Dr. Slayter acquired a graduate degree in preventive medicine from U.C. Davis and is board certified in veterinary pathology.
He retired from active military service in 1994 and from Idexx Laboratories in 2013. His calling to bring the good news of the Gospel to those who would hear it has always been in the background of his thoughts. In being a Commissioned Pastor and now Interim Pastor at First Presbyterian of Kissimmee, that dream is a reality.
